At Lift East Wichel, we view homework not as a chore, but as a powerful tool for growth. Our approach is designed to be short, sharp, and stress-free—focusing on daily consistency to build habits that last a lifetime.Depending on your child’s age, homework here takes just 5 to 20 minutes a day.
Just like brushing your teeth, doing a small amount of learning every day quickly becomes automatic. By instilling this routine early on, we aren't just helping children succeed this week; we are helping them develop the self-discipline to tackle hard things first. This foundational habit will serve them as teenagers facing longer study sessions, and ultimately, as adults navigating the world of work.
‍Our Golden Rule: We never want homework to feel pressured. Shorter is always better. It’s all about building belief, confidence, and a positive experience.
1. Reading & Phonics (The Master Key)
‍Reading is the key that unlocks every other subject area. We prioritise daily reading above all else—even just five minutes a day makes a massive difference. For children who benefit from extra practice to build their confidence, we also provide targeted optional short phonics and handwriting videos. We cannot emphasise enough that reading aloud to an adult—and listening to stories being read—right up to the end of Year 6 is a game-changer that puts children streets ahead!
2. Knowledge Organisers & Practice Books (From Reception Upwards)
Starting in Reception, children receive a Knowledge Organiser containing the core facts for their year group, alongside a Practice Book.
Using principles from cognitive science, we use a simple "Read, Recall, Check" method. Research shows that by testing ourselves and retrieving information from memory, we build stronger mental connections (schemas) that make future learning stick.
While it is always best to do homework at home in a familiar environment if you can, we know that days can be busy and schedules can be tight. We offer two brilliant ways to support your child within the school day:
To ensure every child feels supported, we run a daily Homework Club every lunchtime for 15 minutes. Supervised and supported by a teacher, this club provides a quiet, calm space for any children who are struggling or simply need some extra guidance. Our aim is for this to be a reassuring, supportive place that helps children overcome obstacles and builds their confidence.
‍After-School Support in 'The Nest': If your child stays late with us after school, please do let us know if you would like them to complete their homework while they are in The Nest. We are more than happy to help them get it done before they head home!
